Polish Films Sponsored by the Austin Public Library - Day 1 In 2010, the Austin Polish Society and the Austin Public Library are presenting 16 Polish films. This is a unique opportunity to introduce award-winning Polish films to the Austin community. Showtimes and days vary and the library locations are mapped here. All films will be introduced by APS Film Committee members. The films are free and open to the public. Please thank your APL Librarians and city of Austin council members for supporting the APS and Polish films! For the opening day we selected the following movie: WHAT: Kariera Nikosia Dyzmy/The Career of Nikos Dyzma (2002, directed by Jacek Bromski, 105 minutes, PG-13, English subtitles) WHEN: Thursday, February 18, 6:30PM WHERE: Austin Public Library, Milwood Branch, 12500 Amherst Dr. Austin, TX 78727 A comedy about an undertaker/eulogist whose life takes a dramatic turn when he signs for the mail of a deceased politician. The letter turns out to be an invitation to a party for wealthy and influential figures. At the party, Nikos (played by Cezary Paura) puts the Vice-Premier in his place after he bumps into Nikos, knocking over his salad. Since no one likes the Vice-Premier, Nikos’ action gains him the respect and admiration of everyone in the room and opens the door to politics for him. |

Polish Films Sponsored by the Austin Public Library - Day 2 WHAT: W pustyni I w puszczy/In the Desert and Wilderness (2002, directed by Wladyslaw Slesicki, 111 minutes, English subtitles) WHEN: Saturday, February 20, 2:30PM WHERE: Austin Public Library, Windsor Park Branch, 5833 Westminster Dr. Austin, TX 78723 A rewarding adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz. The principal characters are two young children, who are kidnapped and held for ransom. Escaping their captors, the kids are forced to brave the dangers of uncharted Africa. With little preparation for their plight, the children are nonetheless quick learners when it comes to survival skills. Filmed on location, In the Desert and Wilderness is by no means a children’s film, though older kids might find it worthwhile. |
