Austin, TX 78745 This romantic film (based on a story by Gunter Grass) is about two people, Aleksander and Alexsandra. Alexander is German, born in Gdansk, but living in Germany. Alexsandra, who was born in Vilnius (formerly a part of Poland, now a part of Lithuania), lives in Gdansk. Alexsander left Gdansk in 1945. Alexsandra also left Vilnius in 1945. But the true story is that neither of them simply “left”; they were forcibly exiled. They meet in Gdansk in 1989, when Aleksander comes back to Poland after more than forty years. Aleksander was in the Hitlerjugend as a teenager; Aleksandra was an active member of ZMP - The Polish Youth Association. Flirting and arguing, they fall in love with each other. Both of them would like to contribute to the reconciliation of the two nations, Polish and German. They begin the Polish-German Cemetery Society in order to give to the dead the right to symbolically come back to their homelands. |
