Polish death camp controversy
For many years the new media when referring to the World War II concentration camps that the Nazis built have been calling them “Polish death camps” or “Polish Concentration camps.” Although several of the camps are in Poland, including the infamous and maybe the most recognized camp, Auschwitz, these are not Polish camps! The camps, many of which were built in Nazi-occupied Poland, have nothing to do with Poland other than they are in Poland. It was the Nazi Germany that was responsible for building, and more important, responsible for what went on in the camps. For the media to refer to these camps as “Polish” is an insult!!
When media outlet print: ”Seeing is believing and the Polish camp is pure evil“ (Mirror) and “During the war, Ida Grinspan, now 79, was deported to the Polish death camp in 1944 but was one of the few survivors to make it back to France” (Daily Telegraph). It is inappropriate to refer to Nazi German concentration camps located in Poland as “Polish”, because it could be construed that these were camps under Polish control, not Nazi or German control.
